Since 2000 Sjoerd Vrieswijk has been working for the regional government of the province of Friesland following his studies in Traffic Engineering . He started studying the optimization of the regional infrastructure and assessing the environmental impacts. In 2016 he was appointed as the program-manager for the infrastructural and area development-program, in which the bio-based bridge was the final piece.
To date, Vrieswijk heads Friesland’s Department of Infrastructure. This includes the responsibility for maintaining and operating 55 moveable bridges, 131 fixed bridges, 6 aqueducts, canals distancing 970KM, 600KM of motorways, 200KM of bicycle lanes, and of course the new bio-bridge in Ritsumasy.
