The safeguarding and strengthening of Exe Viaduct

  • Exe Viaduct is an existing structure that carries the M5 over the River Exe, east of Exeter. It is 692m long, composed of two independent externally post tensioned concrete box girders.
  • In 2016 during an inspection, a number of post-tensioning strands were found to have broken, Further investigations found significant defects. What followed was a series of safeguarding works, weight restrictions, and finally strengthening.
  • The presentation will detail the investigations, decisions and works undertaken from 2016 to 2018.
