For the last 3 years he is a consultant for the Dutch Road Authority (Rijkswaterstaat) on (concrete) bridges. We focus on sustainable design of new bridges, but have an even bigger challenge in maintaining our 6000 existing structures. Preferably in a sustainable way as well.

Sustainable procurement – the experiences of RijkswaterstaatRijkswaterstaat is undergoing a period of transformation in order to meet a number of sustainability goals over the coming years. What expectations does Rijkswaterstaat have of the contractors, and what results does it want to achieve? How do the different parties come together on this journey? And how to ensure that project outcomes are in line with sustainability goals? The presenter will share insight into the sustainability goals of Rijkswaterstaat including how the organisation has put into practice the procurement of concrete with a lower footprint, and its re-use.

Determining the structural safety of large numbers of structuresRijkswaterstaat owns approximately 6,000 civil structures in the Netherlands, the vast majority of which are concrete bridges. As the owner, Rijkswaterstaat is responsible for the maintenance and the structural safety of these structures – but how can the structural safety of such large numbers of structures be determined effectively and efficiently? During this workshop we would like to share and exchange experiences and ideas with respect to the determination of the structural safety of large numbers of structures. What’s the UK approach? Is each object considered individually or do you use group strategies as well?
