Richard Fish

Independent Consultant and Technical Secretary, Bridge Owners Forum

Richard Fish started his career in 1976 with Somerset County Council, mostly working on the bridge design and construction. In 1989 he moved to Cornwall County Council as County Bridge Engineer. He became chair of the South West Area Bridge Conference in 1991 and also joined the County Surveyors Society Bridges Group, taking over as secretary in 1992. From 2000, he was promoted to senior management posts in Cornwall and for seven years up to 2009 was Director of Planning, Transportation and Estates.

In 2005, he took on the chairmanship of the CSS Bridges Group and also became chair of the UK Bridges Board. On leaving local government in 2009, Richard returned to his passion of bridge engineering and formed his own consultancy, specialising in bridge asset management. This enabled him to build on experience gained when he was project manager for the strengthening and widening of the Tamar suspension bridge and, as well as more typical bridges, work on long span bridges for clients in the USA, New Zealand, Turkey and Malaysia as well as the UK. Since 2009 he has been the Technical Secretary of the Bridge Owners Forum and in that role continues to sit on the UKBB.
